General Flower Care Tips
Keeping Cut Flowers Fresh
- Trim the stems: Cut stems at a 45-degree angle with sharp scissors or a knife before placing in water. This increases the surface area for water absorption.
- Use clean water: Fill a clean vase with lukewarm water and add the flower food packet that comes with your arrangement. Change the water every two to three days.
- Remove lower leaves: Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Submerged foliage promotes bacterial growth and shortens the life of your flowers.
- Avoid direct sunlight and heat: Place your arrangement in a cool spot away from direct sun, heating vents, and ripening fruit. Ethylene gas from fruit accelerates wilting.
- Re-cut stems regularly: Every time you change the water, trim about half an inch off the bottom of each stem to keep the water channels open.
Choosing Flowers for Occasions
- Birthdays: Bright, cheerful flowers like sunflowers, daisies, and mixed bouquets are always a hit.
- Sympathy: White lilies, white roses, and chrysanthemums convey respect and condolence.
- Anniversaries: Roses remain the classic choice, with color varying by the milestone year.
- Get Well: Bright, uplifting arrangements with daisies, carnations, and alstroemeria bring cheer.
- Weddings: Roses, peonies, orchids, and lilies are popular bridal selections depending on season and style.
