The rose is arguably the most iconic flower in the world, cultivated for thousands of years across virtually every culture. There are over 300 species and tens of thousands of cultivated varieties, ranging from miniature roses barely an inch across to grandifloras with blooms the size of a grapefruit. Garden roses, spray roses, and long-stemmed hybrid tea roses are the most common varieties used in floral design. Their colors span the entire spectrum, from classic red and soft pink to white, yellow, orange, lavender, and even green.
No flower carries more symbolic weight than the rose. Red roses are the universal symbol of romantic love and passion. White roses represent purity, innocence, and new beginnings, making them popular for weddings and memorials. Pink roses convey gratitude, grace, and admiration. Yellow roses symbolize friendship and joy, while orange roses express enthusiasm and desire. Lavender roses suggest enchantment and love at first sight. The number of roses given also holds meaning: a single rose says "I love you," while a dozen represents complete devotion.
With proper care, cut roses can last seven to twelve days. Upon receiving roses, immediately trim the stems at a 45-degree angle under running water to prevent air bubbles from blocking water uptake. Remove all leaves below the waterline and any guard petals that appear bruised or wilted. Use a clean vase with lukewarm water and flower food. Change the water and re-cut stems every two to three days. Keep roses in a cool location away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and ripening fruit.
Roses are the flower of choice for Valentine's Day, anniversaries, weddings, and romantic gestures of all kinds. They also feature prominently in sympathy arrangements, Mother's Day bouquets, and formal event designs. At Keith Wheeler's Flowers, roses are our most popular flower year-round.
